Musician Wayne Shorter dominates Jazz Journalists’ Association awards

Saxophonist-composer Wayne Shorter dominated the seventh annual Jazz Journalists Assn. awards this week, winning four prizes, including Musician of the Year and Album of the Year.

“Footprints Live!” (Verve), featuring Shorter’s quartet in live performance, won the top album prize Wednesday night at B.B. King’s Blues Club and Grill in Manhattan.

He also won the awards as the year’s best tenor saxophonist, and his quartet was honored as the year’s best jazz combo. Pianist Cecil Taylor won a lifetime achievement award from the association, representing more than 400 writers, broadcasters, photographers and Web writers worldwide.
