Renegades win 12th straight
Overland Park ? At this rate, Lawrence’s Renegades might not lose another youth baseball game all summer.
After winning just two of their first eight games, the Renegades have rattled off 12 consecutive victories. The latest casualties were the Diamond Kings, 5-3, and the Kansas City (Mo.) Rockhurst Hawklets, 9-1, Saturday at the Johnson County 3&2 Tournament.
“In all honesty, after what we did last year, I was surprised by the slow start,” Lawrence coach Lynn Harrod said. “I thought we’d do better than that. During the streak we’ve played some good teams and some mediocre teams. But anytime you win 12 in a row, you’ve got to do some things right.”
Ryne Jackson won the opener, improving to 3-1, and was 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the second game. Because of the number of games this weekend, Carl Lisher (1-0) made his first start of the summer in the nightcap, and was 1-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs.
Both pitchers tossed complete-game victories.
“Both had tremendous control; both had command of all their pitches,” Harrod said. “Carl Lisher had to make his first start. He comes out and throws 71 pitches and just throws strikes.
“Ryne Jackson faced a very good team. They were a young team, but they were the best team we’ve seen.”
Kyle McManness was 3-for-3 with a base-loaded triple, and Ryan Engel had two solo home runs in the first game.
The Renegades (14-6) won their pool with a 4-0 record, advancing to a single-elimination game at 8 this morning.
