James Martin has been promoted to associate director by Professional Engineering Consultants, which has an office in Lawrence. Martin’s new responsibilities will coincide with his duties as manager of the Water/Wastewater Division of the company’s Topeka office. His responsibilities include project development, design, management and overseeing quality control. Martin has worked for the company six years. He received a master’s degree in environmental health engineering from Kansas University.

Scott Miller has been named director of the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Wound Healing Center, while Suzanne Mitchell has been named assistant director of the center.

Miller is responsible for the center’s operations, budget, quality management, sales and marketing. Miller spent three years working in the wound care industry at ConvaTec, where he was recipient of numerous sales and performance achievements. Miller earned a bachelor’s degree from Kansas University.

Mitchell manages clinical duties, patient care standards and staff education. Mitchell also helps coordinate care with the patients’ various medical caregivers. Mitchell was a nurse practitioner for the Business Health Center at LMH.

John Dicus, president and CEO of Capitol Federal Savings Bank in Topeka, was elected to a three-year term on the board of directors of the Heartland Community Bankers Assn. during its recent annual meeting in Colorado Springs, Colo. Capitol Federal Savings operates branches in Lawrence.

The Kansas Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration recently elected officers for the 2003-2004 business year. Clark Duffy, of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, was elected president.

Local artist Lucinda “Cindi” Smith recently has been commissioned to paint a four-wall mural for The Florence Crittenton Services’ new facility in Topeka.

First State Bank & Trust has announced the promotions of Cindy Lutz, Anna Glynn and Betty Grollmes.

Lutz, Lawrence, has been named manager of the Customer Contact Center in the bank’s corporate office in Tonganoxie. She will be responsible for the overall coordination of the bank’s credit card and debit card activities, as well as overseeing incoming calls and customer service. She has been with the bank for 5 years as a personal banker at the Lawrence locations.

Glynn and Grollmes have been promoted to personal bankers. Their responsibilities include providing personal and business banking services and consumer loans. Glynn works in the office located in downtown Lawrence, while Grollmes works in the Perry office.

Shirley Martin-Smith, of Lawrence-based Adecco, has been elected chairwoman of the Kansas Chamber board of directors. She replaces Dale Davis, owner of Sauder Custom Fab Inc. in Emporia. Ron Brunton, vice president of manufacturing at Boeing Commercial Airplanes in Wichita, is the group’s first vice chair. Randy Tomlin, president of SBC Southwestern Bell — Kansas of Topeka, is the vice chairman of finance and treasurer.

The board of directors elected 18 new members to three-year terms. Among them are J.R. Neutel, president of The Reuter Organ Company in Lawrence.

Kelvin Heck and Marilyn Bittenbender recently attended the national Society of Industrial and Office Retailers conference in Maui. The Society of Industrial and Office Retailers certifies its members with the SIOR designation, a professional symbol of the highest level of knowledge, production and ethics in the real estate industry.

Honors and awards

Dr. Scott Whitney, of the Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center in Lawrence, was recognized for outstanding service as a therapist at the Fifth Annual OSKARS event June 6-7 in Topeka. OSKARS stands for Outstanding Kansans Applauded and Recognized for exceptional Service to the mental health community. The award was presented by Keys for Networking Inc., an advocacy information and resource group for parents of children with emotional or behavioral disorders.

The Kansas Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration recently recognized Kansas University student Richard “Rocky” Nichols for outstanding work during the 2002-2003 school year. He was honored during the organization’s annual awards meeting.

The Kansas Bar Assn. presented Outstanding Service Awards to Robert Rowland, Lawrence, and John Peck, Lake Quivira, during a luncheon June 9 in Wichita.

Rowland is a professor and chairman of the Department of Communications Studies at Kansas University. Each year he provides support and coaching for the presenters of the KBA’s Kansas Annual Survey, is a contributing author to the “KVA Appellate Practice Handbook,” and has conducted numerous Continuing Legal Education programs and other training for KBA.

Peck is a professor of law and Connell Teaching Professor at the KU law school and is special counsel for the Wichita law firm of Foulston Siefkin LLP in the firm’s Overland Park office. He is an active member of KBA. He has served on the board of editors for the Journal of the Kansas Bar Assn. for more than 20 years.

The Kansas Bar Assn. recognized Deanell Tacha, Lawrence, as the 2003 recipient of the Distinguished Service Award. She was honored June 9 during a luncheon in Wichita.

Tacha joined KU’s school of law faculty in 1974 and became the vice chancellor for academic affairs in 1981. She was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit in 1985 and became chief judge of the 10th Circuit in 2001.

The award recognizes an individual for continuous service on behalf of the legal profession or the public.

Officials from the Kansas Department of Commerce & Housing recognized on June 10 several businesses in Northeast Kansas for the contributions they make to the Kansas economy. The regional awards ceremony was at the Fisher Community Center in Hiawatha as part of the KDOC&H’s celebration of Kansas Business Appreciation Month.

In the Northeast Kansas region, the winners of Regional Achievement Awards were: ScriptPro, Mission, manufacturing; SKC Communications Products Inc., Shawnee Mission, distribution; Main Street Auto Body & Tow Inc., Leavenworth, service; and Mr. Goodcents Franchise Systems, De Soto, retail.

The following Lawrence companies received Merit Recognition Awards: Brown Cargo Van, Hallmark Cards, Huxtable & Associates and Minuteman Press.

Coming events

Agricultural agencies have scheduled two workshops to assist Kansans in applying for the USDA Rural Development Agency’s Value-Added Producer Grant Program.

One workshop will be from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. July 1 at Fort Hays State University’s Albertson Hall. The other workshop will be from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Lyon County Extension Office at 618 Commercial in Emporia.

The Lawrence Express Network, a division of American Business Women’s Assn., will meet Thursday at the Spencer Museum of Art, 1301 Miss. Networking will begin at 11:30 a.m. and a luncheon will begin at noon. Members will tour the art center after lunch. Cost is $15 per person. Guests are welcome. Tenants to Homeowners, a nonprofit organization, is having its 2003 Home Tour from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The tour begins at 1718 Atherton Court in Lawrence where maps will be available.

The tour will include three-bedroom homes and houses that have been designed by Kansas University students.
