Events to accompany ‘Magnificent Age’

Several lectures, films and other events are scheduled to complement the upcoming exhibit, “A Magnificent Age: French Paintings from the Walters Art Museum,” at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. All events are in Atkins Auditorium at the Nelson, 4525 Oak St., Kansas City, Mo., unless otherwise noted.

  • “A Taste for French Art: The Collection of Williams and Henry Walters,” a lecture by William Johnston, associate director and curator of 18th and 19th century art at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, 7 p.m. July 11.
  • “Before There Were Movies: Art as a Window on the World of 19th-century France,” lecture by Ian Kennedy, Louis L. and Adelaide C. Ward Curator of European Painting and Sculpture, 7 p.m. July 25.
  • Romance and Reality Film Series: “Children of the Century,” 6:30 p.m. Aug. 1, “Germinal,” 6 p.m. Aug. 8 and “A Sunday in the Country,” 6:30 p.m. Aug. 15.
  • First Friday Gallery Talk: “From the Studio to the Salon: Artists’ Techniques,” 7 p.m. Sept. 5, meet at the exhibition entrance for a dialogue with Kennedy and museum paintings conservator Scott Heffley.
