Dougherty leads in Champions tourney

? Ed Dougherty sank two birdie putts of more than 40 feet late in the round Saturday to take the lead and tie the Farmers Charity Classic record for lowest 36-hole score.

Dougherty carded a second consecutive 6-under-par 66 in the $1.5 million Champions Tour event at Egypt Valley Country Club, and held a one-stroke lead over Hubert Green. The leader also matched the event’s two-round record of 132, set by Bruce Crampton in 1992 and matched by Jim Colbert a year later.

After missing three potential birdie putts of 12 feet or less, Dougherty drained a 42-footer on the par-3 16th hole. He took the lead with a 50-foot putt from the fringe on the par-5 17th.

“Those were two of the longest putts I ever made and I made them right in a row,” said Dougherty, whose last tour victory was in the 2001 TD Waterhouse Championship.

Each time, he said, he was just trying to get the ball close to the hole.

“I was trying to two-putt (on 16) and it went in,” Dougherty said.

“Pure luck” was his ally on the17th, he explained.

“I tried to hit it on the green thinking that something good would happen, and it did,” Dougherty said.

Green was diagnosed with throat cancer less than a month ago, and plans to begin aggressive treatment at the end of June. He shot a 5-under 67 in the second round.

“I hit a few bad shots and I hit some good shots, but it was fun,” Green said.
