Bookman blazes past Greene

Jayhawk, Kansas City native both advance to finals in 200

? Kansas University sprinter Leo Bookman defeated Olympic gold medalist Maurice Greene head-to-head Saturday in the 200-meter dash qualifying at the USA Track and Field Championships.

Both Bookman and Greene advanced to today’s semifinals.

Bookman, a senior from Dickinson, Texas, won the fifth preliminary quarterfinal heat in 21.06 and had the 11th fastest qualifying time overall.

Greene finished in 21.1 — second in his heat behind Bookman — and had the 12th fastest time entering today’s semis. Ramon Clay of adidas has the top qualifying time of 20.51. He is the defending champion.

“For Leo, it was a good opening and hopefully he’s got something left for tomorrow,” KU coach Stanley Redwine said.

Today’s semifinals will start at 2:15 p.m. with the final at 3:56 p.m.

Also KU freshman Cameron Schwehr qualified for the finals of the junior 1,500 with a semifinal clocking of 3:58.14. It was the second fastest time in the qualifying round. The Colbert, Wash., native advanced to today’s 6:30 p.m. final.

Former KU standout Charlie Gruber placed 12th in the 1,500 semifinals late Friday night in 3:49.37 and will run in today’s finals at 4:20 p.m.
