Arizona beats Reds, finally over .500

? Chad Moeller didn’t miss when he saw his chance for redemption.

The Arizona catcher, crestfallen over a throwing error that tied the game, broke the deadlock with a two-run homer as the Diamondbacks climbed above .500 for the first time all season with a 5-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds Saturday.

“I was thinking, ‘Thank you, Lord, for letting me make up for that embarrassing mishap on that pitchout,”‘ Moeller said. “That gets rid of it real quick.”

John Patterson worked a career-high 7 2/3 innings for the Diamondbacks, whose four-game winning streak is their longest since ending last season with a four-game sweep of Colorado. Arizona (37-36) has won six of its last seven.

“One of the keys that I wanted to do was pitch in real well and hard on them, and I effectively did it, so I was happy with my game plan and the way I executed,” Patterson said.

Steve Finley had a two-run double for the Diamondbacks, who beat the Reds for the 13th consecutive time.

Patterson (1-3) gave up three runs on seven hits, one walk and two wild pitches, striking out seven. He finished with a flourish, striking out Jose Guillen before yielding to Eddie Oropesa, who got Ken Griffey Jr. on a called third strike.

Jose Valverde worked the ninth for his sixth save.

Reds starter Jimmy Anderson (1-4) fell behind 3-0 in the first inning when he loaded the bases by walking Robby Hammock — his second free pass — and Finley followed with a two-run bloop double into the gap.

Hammock scored an unearned run on a passed ball by Jason LaRue.
