Suspects get life terms for murder, robbery

? Three Liberal men were sentenced Tuesday to life in prison for the killing of a central Kansas man during a robbery last November.

Ngam Pham, Giang Nguyen and Nam Nguyen each were convicted of first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated burglary and other related charges in separate trials earlier this year.

The charges stemmed from an incident Nov. 11 in which six members of a Garden City family were tied up and robbed, Finney County Atty. John Wheeler said. One member of the family, Thang Nguyen, 30, was shot and killed as he attempted to escape, Wheeler said.

Approximately $10,000 in jewelry was taken in the incident, Wheeler said.

Pham, 49, who served prison time and was paroled for two first-degree murder convictions in Sedgwick County, was sentenced to life imprisonment plus 20 years for the murder charge and nearly 109 additional years in prison on the other charges, Wheeler said.

Nam Nguyen, 23, was ordered to serve 17 years in prison in addition to the life sentence. Giang Nguyen, 24, was sentenced to 14 years in prison in addition to the life sentence.
