Swimmer’s rescuer found

Several people called the Lawrence Journal-World Friday identifying Josiah Asberry, 12, as the boy who pulled Jordan Seiger, 5, Monday out of the deep end of the Lawrence Aquatic Center.

Jordan, who can’t swim, was at the pool with his Boys and Girls Club group when he jumped off a diving board. Asberry was at the pool with the South Park Summer Playground program and saw Jordan in the water while waiting in line at a diving board.

“I saw him paddling weird and he wasn’t really going anywhere, so I jumped in and got him,” Asberry said. “I’m not really a hero, I was just helping someone in distress.”

Asberry talked with Jordan and his mother, Dayna Seiger, Friday. Josiah said Seiger was buying him a monthlong pool pass as a reward.

Girls State adjourns

Girls from 225 high schools across the state of Kansas returned home Friday after the 61st Sunflower Girls State session came to an end.

The Sunflower Girls State delegates spent the week on the KU campus exploring government at the city, county and state level through mock elections, activities and guest speakers. They spent their final day Friday at the Statehouse, where officers met with their counterparts in government.

They returned to Lawrence for an awards ceremony at the Lied Center, where Janet Murguia, KU executive vice chancellor for university relations, addressed participants.

Sunflower Girls State has been offered through American Legion Auxiliary since 1939, although sessions were suspended from 1943 to 1946 during World War II.
