Royals rally past D’backs – Kansas City 7, Arizona 3

? Carlos Beltran had three hits and three RBIs, and Desi Relaford drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the seventh inning as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks, 7-3, Tuesday night.

Brent Mayne also had three hits for the Royals, who rallied from a 3-0 deficit in a game delayed 1 hour, 45 minutes by rain at the start.

Luis Gonzalez homered, doubled and scored twice for Arizona.

Jason Grimsley (2-3) pitched a perfect seventh to earn the win. Sean Lowe finished with two scoreless innings.

Relaford extended his hitting streak to 12 games, the longest by a Royals player this season.

He had been 0-for-3 before blooping a hit to center off Eddie Oropesa (0-1), scoring Mayne with the go-ahead run. Mayne led off the seventh with a double down the right-field line.

Oscar Villarreal relieved Oropesa after Relaford’s hit. Joe Randa hit a grounder, but third baseman Alex Cintron’s throw to second went into right field for an error, sending Relaford to third. A single by Mike Sweeney drove in Relaford.

After Sweeney was erased when he was hit by Raul Ibanez’s line drive on the basepaths, Beltran singled to right, scoring Randa. When right fielder Robby Hammock bobbled the ball for an error, Ibanez scored to make it 7-3.

Arizona took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on RBI singles by Carlos Baerga and Danny Bautista. Gonzalez added his 13th homer in the third.

The Royals tied it in the sixth on Ibanez’s RBI double and Beltran’s two-run single.

Gonzalez improved his career average against the Royals to .391 with 10 home runs and 25 RBIs. He’s even better in Kansas City, with a .435 average, seven homers and 18 RBIs in 12 games.

Arizona starter Elmer Dessens pitched five shutout innings before giving up three runs on four consecutive hits with one out in the sixth. Beltran’s tying, two-run single chased Dessens, who allowed three runs and seven hits in 51¼3 innings.

Kansas City starter Kyle Snyder gave up three runs on seven hits in six innings before being removed with a lower back spasm. He was replaced by Grimsley, who made his AL-leading 34th appearance.

Notes: All of Arizona’s runs were scored with two outs, and 27 of its 47 runs in June (57 percent) have been scored with two outs. … Randa extended his hitting streak to nine games. … Kansas City’s Michael Tucker was thrown out trying to steal third in the sixth inning, the seventh time this season he has been caught — tied for most in the American League.
