Agassi wins in 1,000th match

Veteran vanquishes Luczak in Queen's Club tournament

? Andre Agassi’s 1,000th career match was tougher than expected, a 7-6 (5), 6-4 victory Tuesday over Australia’s Peter Luczak in the second round at Queen’s Club.

Third-seeded Andy Roddick had a far easier time in this Wimbledon warmup, defeating South African qualifier Rik De Voest 6-3, 6-2.

In the day’s big surprise, fourth-seeded Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand lost 6-3, 6-3 to Mario Ancic of Croatia. The Thai never found his rhythm, netting many volleys and leaving himself open to Ancic’s passing shots.

Agassi, playing at Queen’s Club for only the second time, was tested in the first set by Luczak, a native Pole. The second set was decided by a single break to love in the opening game.

“He played better than I would have wanted, actually,” said Agassi, whose career record is now 766-234. “The first set I felt was really in balance. I got off to a good start but then he came up with some good returns and got right back into the set.”

Agassi thought it ironic that his milestone of 1,000 matches should come on grass.

“When I started playing I wouldn’t have thought any of my 1,000 matches would have been on grass, to be honest,” he said.

“It’s amazing to look back on it, and there’s not a heck of a lot that can go on out there that I haven’t seen one way or another,” he added. “Yet every time it feels new, a whole different set of challenges.”
