Old home town – 25 and 40 years ago today

IN 1978

The federal government was playing a game of “dirty pool” with American farmers by allowing 200 million additional pounds of imported beef into the United States in 1978, said Earl Van Meter, director of Douglas County Extension. Van Meter was joined by a majority of local livestock people who condemned the policy of President Jimmy Carter.

IN 1963

The Boys State program of the American Legion was wrapping up its first session on the Kansas University campus and was already set to be back in 1964. The program had been shifted, under protest, after a long period at Wichita University.

The Lone Star Lake Assn. planned a meeting to discuss the serious leakage in the dam area, which it considered hazardous to the future of the lake and surrounding region. Emory Scott and Ben Barteldes headed the group.
