Interleague: Phils blank Angels

Rollins, Thome lead Philadelphia to 3-0 win

? Jimmy Rollins and Jim Thome both hit solo home runs in the seventh, and Vicente Padilla threw seven solid innings as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Anaheim Angels, 3-0, Monday night in the first-ever meeting between the teams.

Padilla (5-7) allowed five hits, struck out two and walked none. The right-hander, who joined the Phillies in July 2000 as part of the five-player deal that sent Curt Schilling to Arizona, had dropped six of his previous seven decisions after shutting out Atlanta April 19.

Rheal Cormier pitched a scoreless eighth and Jose Mesa pitched a perfect ninth for his 16th save in 19 chances. It was his 103rd save with the Phillies, tying Steve Bedrosian’s club record.

Jarrod Washburn (6-6) pitched 72¼3 innings and allowed three runs on eight hits, including an RBI single in the sixth by Thome.

The Angels left-hander is 7-0 in 15 regular-season interleague starts — although he was 0-2 against San Francisco in the World Series.

Philadelphia's Jason Michaels makes a diving catch to rob Anaheim's Brad Fullmer of a base hit in the fourth inning. Philadelphia defeated the Angels, 3-0, Monday night in Anaheim, Calif.

The only Philadelphia baserunner through the first five innings was Mike Lieberthal, who singled leading off the second and fifth innings.

But Jason Michaels opened the sixth with a double in the gap past diving left fielder Garret Anderson and Marlon Byrd each reached on infield singles. Michaels scored when Thome lined a single to center.

Scott Spiezio led off the third and fifth innings with singles for the Angels’ only hits to that point — although Padilla hit two other batters. Spiezio singled again in the seventh, but Brad Fullmer overslid third base, and David Bell tagged him for the second out after taking a one-hop throw from right fielder Bobby Abreu. Padilla then retired Benji Gil on a comebacker.

Spiezio was stranded at third base in the third when Adam Kennedy struck out and Darin Erstad grounded out. Erstad was activated from the DL before the game.
