Hillary Clinton spills to Barbara Walters

Barbara Walters sits down with America’s former first lady and New York’s junior senator for an hourlong special with the ponderous title “Hillary Clinton’s Journey: Public, Private, Personal” (6 p.m. Sunday, ABC). Sen. Clinton promises to discuss her political career, private life and the contents of the book for which she received an $8 million advance.

The fact that Clinton chose to speak with Walters is certainly a story in itself. After all, Walters got huge ratings some years back when she interviewed Monica Lewinsky, whose relationship to the senator’s husband needs no explanation.

Clinton’s infrequent TV interviews are both notable and quotable. During a 1992 “60 Minutes” chat, she irked Tammy Wynette fans by commenting that she was more than just a wife, baking cookies, “standing by my man.” In a 1998 conversation with “Today’s” Katie Couric, she coined the phrase “vast right-wing conspiracy” to describe her husband’s detractors. Clinton’s book “Living History” goes on sale Monday.
