Brewers sweep Mets; Glavine injured

? Ben Sheets pitched seven sharp innings, and Milwaukee scored four times in the first off Tom Glavine before he left because of an injured elbow as the Brewers beat the New York Mets, 5-3, Thursday to complete a doubleheader sweep.

In the opener, Richie Sexson, Eric Young, Geoff Jenkins and Royce Clayton homered to help Milwaukee to an 8-7 win, its first victory at Shea Stadium since Sept. 11, 2000.

Glavine allowed four runs in a 51-pitch first inning, then surrendered a double to Scott Podsednik to start the second. After going 2-0 on Sexson, catcher Vance Wilson went to the mound, said something to Glavine and looked to the dugout.

Manager Art Howe, trainer Scott Lawrenson and pitching coach Vern Ruhle went to the mound and ended Glavine’s shortest start since he didn’t get an out May 19, 1989, for Atlanta against the Chicago Cubs. He will be re-evaluated to see if he can make his next start.

Losing Glavine for any period would be devastating to the Mets, who already have four pitchers on the DL. Fifth starter Pedro Astacio likely will have right shoulder surgery Tuesday.

Glavine (5-6) allowed five runs, four hits and five walks — one intentional in one-plus innings.

John Franco pitched an inning of relief, making the 1,000th appearance in his career — he’s the only the eighth pitcher to do so.

Sheets (6-4) retired the first nine batters he faced and went more than seven innings for the third consecutive start.
