March, rally to support public education efforts

Supporters of public education will take to Lawrence’s streets Saturday for a march and rally in South Park.

Richard Heckler, of Lawrence, said the 11 a.m. march from Buford M. Watson Jr. Park, Seventh and Kentucky streets, to South Park, 11th and Massachusetts streets, was organized to express displeasure with lack of state funding of schools.

“We’re rallying to do whatever is necessary to create more than adequate funding for public education,” he said.

The Lawrence school district recently issued layoff notices to more than 60 certified educators and nearly 30 classified staff to cut costs. Three elementary schools also were closed in May.

The march is sponsored by the Brook Creek Neighborhood Assn. in cooperation with Lawrence Association of Neighborhoods, Kaw Valley Green Party and Kansas Families United for Public Education.
