No safe route

To the editor:

This letter is in regard to National Bike to Work Day.

If Lawrence did have a safe and viable bike path from my own “point A to point B” — from North Lawrence to 23rd and Louisiana streets — I would do it every day, as Keith McMahon and Craig Weinaug do. The most expeditious route is over the Kaw River bridge and down Tennessee Street, which can barely handle parked cars and two lanes of traffic. Any other route involves crossing campus or downtown. It’s my understanding that riding a bike on a sidewalk is illegal. Am I incorrect?

I would welcome any suggestions on how to ride a bike across town from north to south, safely, and would contend that Lawrence has miles to go before it can be declared bike-friendly.
