KU Summer Band starts new season

Local musicians will gather beginning Tuesday night to rehearse with the second annual Kansas University Summer Band.

The group is open to instrumentalists in high school and older, though some exceptions could be made. Rehearsals will be from 6:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. in Room 130 in Murphy Hall.

The summer will culminate in a concert July 15 at Murphy Hall featuring traditional concert band music.

Tom Stidham, associate professor of music, will direct the band, which had about 70 participants last year. Participation is free.

“The object is to have a good time, and to let people keep their chops up,” Stidham said.

Fields Gallery to feature Colette Bangert talk

Lawrence artist Colette Bangert will discuss her artwork in a gallery talk titled “Garden Thread Pieces” from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Fields Gallery, 712 Mass.

Bangert, a Lawrence resident since 1967, has participated in exhibitions for more than 40 years. Like her earlier paintings and drawings, her pieces in colorful fabric and thread explore abstract expressions of the Midwestern landscape.

Her talk is the latest in a series of discussions the gallery has organized so that artists can share ideas and approaches to their work with the public in an informal setting. For more information, call the gallery at 842-7187.

Wonderscope to bring ‘Sticky Business’ to LAC

The Wonderscope Children’s Museum staff is bringing two four-day workshops titled “Sticky Business” to the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H.

The workshops are for children ages 4-6. They begin Monday and last through Thursday. The two-hour sessions will be from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Children’s creative juices will be tempted with “sticky stuff” like bubbles, clay, tape, glue and magnets. Participants also will receive a Wonderscope family pass to enjoy a future family outing to the museum in Shawnee.

To enroll or for additional information about “Sticky Business” or other activities at the arts center this summer, call 843-2787.
