Kennedy shorts on brief display

Dublin, Ireland — For three brief days, Dublin has an unlikely new tourist attraction — a pair of John F. Kennedy’s boxer shorts.

The white cotton underwear, left, dating from Kennedy’s early career as a U.S. naval officer in World War II, went on display Tuesday in the window of a central Dublin menswear shop, Louis Copeland & Sons.

Paul Allen, an Irish admirer of Kennedy, bought the shorts for $5,000 at an auction last week. The underwear and one of Kennedy’s Italian-made white dress shirts, bought for $2,000, will be shipped Friday to Boston for display at the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum.

Winfrey wants more Hawaiian land

Kula, Hawaii — Oprah Winfrey, already the owner of 100 shorefront acres in Hana, reportedly is shopping for more Maui real estate.

Winfrey has made offers on several properties in Kula, the Maui News reported Wednesday. According to the paper, the maven at the helm of a multimillion-dollar media conglomerate has had some bids accepted and others turned down.

Clinton going into trade

Little Rock, Ark. — Presses rolled Tuesday to produce a set of 100,000 trading cards depicting former President Clinton and his chocolate Labrador retriever, Buddy.

Clinton agreed to let the Hot Springs Advertising and Promotion Commission print the card, above, which shows Clinton hugging Buddy in April 1999 on the South Lawn of the White House. The 4-year-old dog died when he was hit by a car in January 2002.

The Hot Springs Advertising and Promotion Commission will use the cards to hype Hot Springs National Park, the 42nd president’s boyhood home. As in the past, the Hot Springs Convention and Visitors Bureau will give away the cards. Three-card sets will become available Aug. 19.

Hurley starts filming in Romania

Bucharest, Romania — Elizabeth Hurley is in Bucharest to start work on a new movie called “The Method,” a film company said Wednesday.

The model-actress arrived late Monday and will stay for more than a month to play a leading part in the film by British director Duncan Roy, said Bogdan Moncea, a spokesman for Romanian Castel Films.

Hurley, 38, will play an actress who gets the role of a 19th-century serial killer and begins taking on some of the killer’s characteristics in real life.

Romania has become attractive for film productions because of low costs and unspoiled scenery. Recently it was the location for “Cold Mountain,” starring Nicole Kidman.
