Softball Tryouts: Tryouts for the Chili Peppers, a U-12 girls softball team, will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Lake Shawnee complex red field. League games will be at Lake Shawnee. For information, call 841-0428.

  • JGC Co-Leaders: Mike Grosdidier and Kirk Schneider both shot 71s to share the top spot in last Sunday’s Jayhawk Golf Club tournament at Alvamar. Tom Dennis was third with a 76. In net scoring, Bob Clark was low with a 66 followed by Bob Losasso with a 67 and Jim Currier with a 69.

  • Phenix U-12 Earns Gold: Lawrence Phenix U-12 won its age-group softball gold medal at last weekend’s Sunflower State Games in Topeka. Team members are Jamie Morgison, Kacie Welborn, Lexi Smith, Jourdan Sumonja, Rosie Hull, Maggie Hull and Heather Miller of Lawrence; Bailey Scott and Madison OIler of Eudora; and Alex Zordel and Haley Finucane of Baldwin. Coaches are Laurie Miller, Bill Finucane, Don Zordel and Marv Oller.

  • Canoeist 25th: Dick Plumlee of Lawrence finished 25th out of 146 competitors in the AuSable Canoe Marathon Sunday in Oscoda, Mich. Plumlee finished the 120-mile race in about 161/2 hours.

  • Bearcats take gold: The CKO Bearcats won the gold medal in the 11th-12th grade boys basketball division at the Sunflower State Games Sunday. The team, which includes Cameron Karlin, Mark Case, Joe Christmore, Brent Lierz, Kit Swain, Will Thomas and Brandon Smith, beat the Shawnee Mission Northwest Cougars, 41-32, in the championship game. Bob Case is coach.

  • Kings Gold Medalists: Lawrence Kings won the gold medal in fifth-sixth grade basketball at the Sunflower State Games. Team members are Sebastian Bonner, Shawn Brown, Daniel Chance, Dar Fornelli, Chase Hoag, Chuckie Hunter, C.J. McTizic, Denzell Payne, Terry Riley, Chandler Schaake and Robbie Wright. Coaches are Sebastian Bonner and Danny Affalter.

  • Edler Ace: Steve Edler used a pitching wedge Tuesday to ace the 124-yard, par-3 No. 2 hole at the Orchards. The witness was Mitch Morley.

  • Boeck, Heitzman Win: Dee Boeck of Lawrence won the women ages 50-55 competition at the Cancer Action 5K last Saturday in Kansas City, Kan. Paul Heitzman of Eudora won the men’s 70-74 division.

  • SSG Champs: CKO Bearcats won the basketball gold medal in the grades 11-12 division of the Sunflower State Games. Team members from Lawrence are Adam Bellinder, Mark Case, Cameron Karlin, Kit Swain and Will Thomas.

  • Rowing Standouts: Jenny Schaetzel, Katie Schaetzel and Jenica Wessels competed in the Junior U.S. National Rowing Assn. Championships in Camden, N.J. Katie Schaetzel placed 12th in singles and seventh in doubles with Wessels.

  • Three Golds: Erica Ogle of Baldwin was a triple gold medal winner in ages 17-18 track at the Sunflower State Games in Topeka. Ogle won the 800, the 1,500 and the 3,000.

  • Swim Golds: Nine members of the Lawrence Aquahawks earned gold medals in the Missouri Valley Division II long course swim championships last weekend in Topeka. Event winners were Julian McCafferty, Kara Mishler, Eric Sparks, Hannah Buchner, Marcy Vickers, Zachary Andregg, Sarah Schwartz, Adam Winter and Amanda Bari.
