Commodities

Chicago Board of Trade

Soybean futures tumbled Tuesday on the Chicago Board of Trade, pressured by a wave of technically motivated selling.

Corn and wheat finished mixed and little-changed.

Soybean prices reversed the previous day’s gains on first notice day for the August contract, when investors start selling contracts for commodities they don’t want to take possession of. Market-watchers also said the absence of follow-through buying interest after Monday’s price rise helped touch off the selling spree.

Corn inched fractionally higher following a weekly crop report that contained few surprises. Some support came from the slight decline in crop conditions, but most analysts had already factored it into prices.

Wheat decreased modestly on profit-taking that took place after early buying interest vanished.

Wheat for September delivery fell 2 1/4 cents to $3.47 1/4 a bushel; September corn rose 1/4 cent to $2.10 a bushel; September oats rose 5 3/4 cents to $1.42 a bushel; August soybeans fell 14 3/4 cents to $5.39 1/2 a bushel.
