Clement tosses two-hitter for Cubs
St. Louis, Chicago close gap on first-place Houston in NL Central
Chicago ? Matt Clement shut out the Giants and shut down Barry Bonds.
Clement pitched a two-hitter for his third career shutout, and Moises Alou hit a three-run homer in the first inning to lead the Chicago Cubs over San Francisco 3-0 Tuesday night.
Clement (8-9) struck out eight and walked two as the Giants lost for just the second time in the last 12 games. Bonds went 0-for-3.
“A team like that is going to be on you and they aren’t going to let you out of jams,” Clement said. “They aren’t going to miss if they get a lot of runners on base.”
Chicago pulled within 31/2 games of first-place Houston in the NL Central, while St. Louis moved within two games of the lead.
Clement struck out the side on nine pitches in the fifth inning and allowed just a bloop single down the right-field line and an infield single past the mound. Clement, who walked two, even received a standing ovation after striking out in the eighth.
Clement matched the low-hit game of his career, on May 28 last year against Pittsburgh. While Clement has pitched at least six innings and allowed three runs or fewer in his last seven starts, he is just 3-2 in that span.
“This was his best game,” Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. “He had it going on. We got the early runs from (Alou) and that’s all that Matt needed.”
It was Clement’s first shutout since a three-hitter against Arizona last Aug. 24 and his fourth complete game.
The only hits for the Giants were a fourth-inning infield single by Marquis Grissom and a seventh-inning single to right by Andres Galarraga. Neither were hit hard.
“He had a good slider and spotted it well, and we didn’t do a very good job of picking it up or laying off it,” said Jose Cruz Jr., who struck out twice.
Bonds, who entered with a .429 average and three homers against Clement, went hitless with two flyouts.
