Police investigate burned child

? Wichita police on Monday were investigating whether a 3-year-old boy who had been burned on his genital area was a victim of child abuse.

The boy’s 19-year-old baby sitter called police Saturday evening after noticing the burns. The boy told the baby sitter his mother had caused the burns, police said.

Lt. Roy Mitchell of the Wichita-Sedgwick County Exploited and Missing Child Unit said the boy’s mother had contacted authorities and planned to meet for an interview today. Mitchell said he did not regard her as a suspect or a “person of interest,” but said he simply wanted to question her. She was neither arrested nor charged.

Wichita Police Capt. Darrell Haynes said the boy had been treated Saturday at a Wichita hospital and released, then taken into protective custody.

Mitchell said he did not want to speculate on how the boy had been burned, although he said he could not think of a way it could have happened accidentally.

“The initial indications we have is that it was not an accidental burn,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell said the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services was also investigating the case. He said he expected the investigation to last several days before being referred to the District Attorney’s Office. He said the boy’s injuries could lead to child abuse or neglect charges.
