Jack Berkowitz, a member of Troop 52 and Venturing Crew 2691, attended Philmont Boy Scout Ranch in New Mexico July 8–22. He traveled with a group from Troop 61, chartered to Beth Shalom Synagogue in Kansas City, Mo.

While on the trek Berkowitz earned the 50–Miler Award and God and Me Award. The boys hiked more than 50 miles, with full backpack, carrying their supplies. Among the activities were burro racing, shotgun and rifle shooting, and rock and wall climbing.

The last day the boys hiked nine miles over the Tooth of Time into the main camp. This was a Sabbath observance trek, so the boys ate only kosher food and did not hike from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday.
