Pollom Services
Services for Barbara Cook Colyer Pollom, 89, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Pollom died Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at her home.
She was born July 9, 1914, in Springfield, Mo., the daughter of Otis and Pearl (Cain) Cook.
Mrs. Pollom graduated from high school in Springfield, Mo. She received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education in 1942 from Northeastern University in Oklahoma and a master’s degree in art education in 1972 from Kansas University.
She was an elementary teacher from 1950 until 1963 in Bartlesville, Okla., and served as art coordinator there from 1964 to 1967. She moved in 1968 to Lawrence, where she taught from 1968 to 1979 at Centennial and Kennedy schools and was a paraprofessional in 1989-1990 at Hillcrest School. Later, she was a freelance painter. Some of her works hang in Presbyterian Manor and Harvard Medical Group Building.
Mrs. Pollom belonged to Sigma Sigma Sigma social sorority and Kappa Kappa Iota professional sorority. She was president of the Bartlesville Education Assn. in 1961-62. She was a member of First Baptist Church and a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
She married Lester Pollom on Sept. 27, 1989, in Lawrence. He died July 31, 1996.
Survivors include a stepgranddaughter, Kathy Wright, Lawrence; a stepgreat-granddaughter, Rebecca Wright, of the home; and a stepgreat-grandson, T.J. Wright, Lawrence.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at Warren McElwain Mortuary. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until service time Monday at the church.
The family suggests memorials to Johnny Appleseed Christian Preschool, sent in care of the mortuary.
