Soccer Runners-Up: Lawrence's Carrie Skahan and Kristin Bock played on the soccer team that finished second in the women's open division at the Sunflower State Games last weekend in Topeka.

  • Rebels Earn Fifth: The Lawrence Rebels finished fifth in the age-13 division of the AAYBA World Series last week in St. Louis. The Rebels beat teams from Springfield, Ill.; Jefferson City, Mo.; Collinsville, Ill.; Detroit, Mich.; Richmond, Va.; and Marietta, Ga. Team members were Kelson Boyer, Todd Brown, Skylar Buttermore, Jordan Dreiling, Caleb Gress, Joe Kornbrust, Cody Lown, Adam Rock, Craig Rosenstengle, Hunter Scheib, E.J. Swanson, Rafferty Thompson, Jared Vinoverski and John Wilson. Coaches were Eric Long and Jon Murray.

  • Huckfeldt JGC Winner: Ron Huckfeldt fired a two-over-par 74 and won last Saturday's Jayhawk Golf Club tournament at Alvamar by two strokes over Van Reichert and Ben Overman. Bob Clark had the low net score with a 68. Runners-up were Chris Anderson, Jim Currier and Pat McCraney, all with 71s.


  • Ross Hole-in-One: Ben Ross of De Soto used a seven-iron to ace the par-three, 179-yard No. 8 hole last Saturday at Eagle Bend Golf Course. Charles Nunley was the witness.

  • Manning camp next week: Former Kansas University All-American Danny Manning will conduct his annual camp for youths Monday through Thursday at Sport2Sport. The camp is open to boys and girls entering grades 2-9 in the fall of 2003. The morning session runs from 9 a.m. until noon and is open to children grades 2-5. The afternoon session runs from from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. for children entering grades fifth through ninth. Fifth graders can attend either session.   • Baseball instruction: Five-Tool Baseball School is taking registration for the fall session. Dates are Aug. 16 and 23, and Sept. 6, 13, 20, 27. Grades 3-12 are eligible. Call Mike Hill at 766-4916.


  • Coach-pitch triumphs: The Lawrence All-Stars 8-year-old baseball squad went 5-0 last weekend at the Saddle Club Coach Pitch Showdown. Lawrence members were Matthew Baker, Jacob Caldwell, Garrick Clapp, Drake Hofer, Rigby McClure, Dane McCullough, Jake Mosiman, Adam Rea, Cody Scott, Kyle Shanks, Stan Skwarlo, Cody Stanclift and Shane Willoughby. Coaches are Darren McClure, Mike Stanclift and Mike Willoughby.
