QB Green puts lid on Chiefs’ playoff talk

? Quarterback Trent Green is trying to put a stop to all the talk at Chiefs’ training camp about the team’s playoff potential or the possibility of making the Super Bowl.

His warning: not so fast.

Green said the team needed to stay focused on improving in practice each day. The only game Green thinks the Chiefs should be looking at is the first one.

“That’s a lot of big talk early on,” said Green, who is in his 10th year in the NFL. “We’re only in the fourth practice. Our most important thing should be winning on Sept. 7 against San Diego. It’s not only the opener, and not only a conference opponent, but a division opponent, and everybody knows, based on the new system, the division games are your most important. So let’s focus in on beating San Diego, and then we’ll go from there.”

Green is as excited as the rest of his teammates about the team’s potential, but he said any talk during training camp of making the playoffs was premature.

“Definitely the goal of this team is to make the playoffs,” he said. “But if you ask 31 other teams around the league, that’s what their goal is as well.”

All-Pro tight end Tony Gonzalez is one of the players having a hard time containing his enthusiasm. Though he admits he thinks training camp “stinks,” Gonzalez said he has never been more optimistic entering a season.

“There’s just no telling what we could do this year,” he said. “I’m excited about it, the guys on the team are excited about it, the coaches are excited about it. This is the best team I’ve ever been on, and I can’t wait to get the season going.”

The thing Gonzalez likes best about this year’s team is its character.

Kansas City tight end Tony Gonzalez, center, makes a catch as he is hit by teammate Mike Maslowski, right, and Greg Wesley (25) looks on. The Chiefs worked out Tuesday in River Falls, Wis.

“There are no hotheads or egomaniacs. These guys want to go out there and win,” he said. “It’s time to bring a trophy, an AFC championship and a Super Bowl championship, to Lamar Hunt and the fans of Kansas City.”

Though Green has similar goals, he said there was still a lot work to be done.

“You can always get better,” he said. “We’re continuing to try and experiment this season so we can continue to grow. We know that everybody is going to be gunning for us from an offensive standpoint because of the success we’ve had, so we’ve got to continue to grow.”

But Green acknowledges he’s also excited about the Chiefs’ potential.

“It doesn’t look like we’ve skipped a beat,” he said. “That’s a real positive because a lot of times those first couple of practices you have growing pains getting back into it. But I think we’ve been clicking right out of the gate, and that’s very encouraging.”

Kansas City linebacker Monty Beisel, right, tackles running back and rookie first-round draft pick Larry Johnson. Beisel made the hit during practice Tuesday afternoon in River Falls, Wis.
