Kansas loses defensive back, gains another

Markeith Childress won’t be coming to Kansas University.

Where the defensive back will be playing football in the fall is uncertain, but Long Beach City College coach Jerry Jaso said Wednesday that Childress had failed to qualify academically.

Childress (5-foot-11, 200 pounds) did meet NCAA requirements, Jaso said, but not KU’s.

“You guys have stricter entrance requirements than other places,” Jaso said of Kansas. “He could qualify for somebody else.”

Kansas coach Mark Mangino declined to comment.

Childress was an honorable mention all-conference performer who helped Long Beach win the Mission Conference and earn a berth in the Western States Bowl.

If Childress finds a new school and qualifies academically, it’s likely Kansas would release the junior from his letter-of-intent as long as the school isn’t a member of the Big 12 Conference.

Childress made verbal commitments to Kansas and Colorado State before signing with the Jayhawks in February.

“He’s pretty good,” Jaso said. “He’s a big, strong, physical guy.”

Kansas signed 26 players — including 13 junior college transfers — last winter. The Jayhawks won’t know how many recruits will be eligible until after the summer session ends July 25.

The loss of Childress won’t sting for long. Rivals.com reported late Wednesday night that KU had landed sophomore defensive back Rodney Fowler (6-0, 192) of Pasadena City College, the same school that produced transfer lineman Chuck Jones.

Fowler, who also was recruited by Washington, Arizona and Arizona State, already is on campus, according to rivals.com, and has four years to use three seasons of eligibility.
