Boone blasts commish

? Add Bret Boone to the list of commissioner Bud Selig’s critics.

Seattle’s All-Star said Monday Selig was behind many of baseball’s problems. The game needs an unbiased commissioner, Boone said, adding that Selig had an inherent conflict of interest as a former owner.

“I don’t want somebody that’s going to do what’s best for the players. I don’t want somebody that’s going to do what’s best for the owners,” Boone told reporters. “I want somebody to make the decisions based on what’s best for the game of baseball.

“How fair is it when an owner is the commissioner?” he said.

“‘Oh, but he’s not an owner. His daughter is,'” Boone answered himself, sarcastically. “Yeah, right. That’s the No. 1 thing that’s wrong with the game.”

Selig didn’t want to respond in detail to Boone’s remarks.

“People commenting, particularly on things they have no clue, is just not worth responding,” he said Monday night. “I know a bunch of people who would be glad to rip a lot of people. The guy who’s paying his way into the ballpark, frankly, doesn’t care.”

Selig’s family has controlled the Milwaukee Brewers since 1970, when the team moved from Seattle. He became acting commissioner in September 1992 after the forced resignation of Fay Vincent, then took the job permanently in July 1998.

“I’m a purist,” said Boone, whose father and grandfather also were All-Stars. “I don’t think you mess with the game. Leave the game alone. It’s been here a long time.

“Any player worth his weight is going to go up there and do the best job he can,” he said. “I couldn’t imagine going up there and not caring. You’ve got the biggest stage, other than the World Series, in our game, who wants to do bad? Who wants to look bad? I want to do the best job I can.”
