Hovey H. Hanna

Services for Hovey H. “Bud” Hanna, 88, Lawrence, will be private.

Mr. Hanna died Thursday, July 10, 2003, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community.

He was born Feb. 1, 1915, in Lawrence, the son of Hovey James and Juliet (Sadler) Hanna. He graduated in 1938 from Kansas University law school.

Mr. Hanna was the owner of Hanna’s Appliance until he sold it in 1996. He began working at the store after graduating from KU. He purchased half of it and inherited the other half after his father’s death in 1952.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was an original member of KU’s Century Club, which later became the Williams Fund. He was also a member and former president of Lawrence Rotary Club, an honorary member of Lawrence Country Club, and a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and Glee Club while attending KU.

He married Aleen Cheatham on Aug. 25, 1937, in Chillicothe, Mo. She died Oct. 10, 1997.

Survivors include a son, John, and his wife, Jan, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a daughter, Jennifer H. Coen, and her husband, Tom, of Kansas City, Mo.; a sister, Mary Tudor May, of California; and two grandchildren, Jay Hanna and Hanna Coen Brandt.

The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 16 at Hanna Appliance.

The family suggests memorials to Kansas Cancer Institute at KU Endowment Association, American Cancer Society Great American Smokeout or Mid America Hospice. They may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
