Diaz Services

Services for Arthur M. Diaz Sr., 78, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Mr. Diaz died Thursday, July 10, 2003, at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor.

He was born Sept. 9, 1924, in Galveston, Texas, the son of Manuel and Maria (Martinez) Diaz. He graduated in 1950 from the University of New Mexico with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry.

Mr. Diaz was a pilot for the U.S. Air Corps during World War II. He was a chemist and hydrologist with U.S. Geological Survey, and retired after 34 years. He later worked for H&R Block until his retirement in 2001.

He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, American Chemical Society, Water Pollution Control Federation, Sigma Xi, Society of Applied Spectroscopy, Optima International and American Legion Post No. 58 in Topeka.

He married Carmen H. Hernandez on Nov. 25, 1950, in Albuquerque, N.M. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include a son, Arthur Jr., Lawrence; a daughter, Clare E. Wadkins, Lawrence; a sister, Linda Martino, Albuquerque, N.M.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to the church or Douglas County Visiting Nurses Assn. They may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.
