Army, aid workers discover 28 corpses

Government soldiers and aid workers discovered 28 corpses Friday as fighting between Hutu rebels and the Tutsi-dominated army raged on in the capital of this central African nation.

Aid workers found 17 bodies — including four children and their parents — buried near a house in the southern Bujumbura neighborhood of Kinanira, said an aid worker, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Army spokesman Augustin Nzabampema said government soldiers later found 11 bodies on the dusty streets in the same residential neighborhood, which has been beset by the fighting.

Two Americans injured in shark attacks

An American man attacked by a shark during a spear-fishing trip was listed in serious condition Friday.

Richard Horton, 58, was spearfishing in Abaco Island’s Bakers Bay when a shark bit his right leg Wednesday. He was airlifted to New Providence Island and underwent surgery, officials said.

Horton, of South Orange Park, Fla., was the second man attacked in a week in Abaco.

Benjamin Brown, 39, of Juno Beach, Fla., was bitten last week while spear-fishing with his brother in Walker’s Cay. He was airlifted to a hospital in West Palm Beach, Fla., where doctors performed reconstructive surgery on his left calf.

‘Feta police’ to combat contaminated cheese

Greece has declared war on bad cheese and vowed to form a special “feta police” after three tons of the famous Greek product arrived in Norway tainted with listeria.

Agriculture Minister Giorgios Dris said in comments published Friday that a cheese-control squad was needed to avoid further blows to the reputation of one of Greece’s main exports.

“We will be merciless,” Dris said, who dubbed the new unit the “feta police.”

One killed, 20 injured in two earthquakes

Two earthquakes shook villages in southern Iran, killing one person and injuring 20, the official Islamic Republic News Agency reported Friday.

The tremors, magnitudes 5.6 and 5.8, damaged several villages, a local governor said.

Two people were hospitalized and others were treated for minor injuries in Zarrin-Dasht, 620 miles southeast of Tehran.
