Ex-girlfriend leads police to suspect in jail escape

? The former girlfriend of a murder defendant who escaped from jail with three fellow inmates directed police to the Arizona motel room where he was captured 13 hours after the jailbreak, officials said Saturday.

Robert Kiro, 34, is a defendant in a 2001 police officer slaying. He faced trial next month over the killing, which happened during a hostage barricade in which the girlfriend was allegedly threatened, said Gallup police Capt. Bobby Silva.

Investigators went to the woman’s house after the jailbreak Friday to learn whether Kiro had contacted her. She said she had driven Kiro to the motel that day and gave officers his room number, Silva said.

Kiro was recaptured late Friday at the Chieftain Motel in Chambers, Ariz.

“The Gallup Police Department’s main concern was Kiro,” Silva said.

Still at large were Eric Leyba, 18, and Alejandro Balderama, 23. Leyba is charged with beating a Gallup man to death in 2002. Balderama was being held on charges of shooting at a dwelling.

Authorities were angered by the privately run county jail’s handling of the jailbreak, which went unreported until one of the fugitives, injured jumping from the jail roof, showed up at a hospital a few hours later. Manuel Vasquez, 32, had hitched a ride to the hospital.

The four escaped by leaping three floors from the jail’s rooftop exercise enclosure during an exercise period Friday morning, authorities said.

Gallup is about 120 miles northwest of Albuquerque.
