Team USA tops Japan twice
DURHAM, N.C. ? Ray Tanner had three words for Team USA as it broke camp last week — Win Them All.
Claiming victory in 22 straight games before heading to the Pan Am Games Aug. 2 is a bit unrealistic in baseball, but Tanner’s college all-stars are off to a good start.
Stanford’s Danny Putnam went 4-for-4, including a grand slam and RBI double, as Team USA beat Japan, 9-4, in the second game of a doubleheader Thursday night for the club’s third straight win.
The Americans won the first game, suspended from Wednesday night, 3-0, as four pitchers combined for the four-hitter.
“Some people would say that’s impossible,” Putnam said of winning 22 straight wins. “But in life you try to be as good as you can. It’s great to play for somebody who expects to win and wants to win every single game. That’s our approach.”
Team USA was up 5-2 after scoring three runs in the first inning and two in the second inning.
