Umpires selected for All-Star game
New York — Tim McClelland will be the home plate umpire for the All-Star game in Chicago July 15.
The umpires joining McClelland will be Larry Young at first base, Gary Darling at second, Gary Cederstrom at third, Mark Carlson in left field and Bill Welke in right, Major League Baseball announced Thursday.
McClelland was the umpire who discovered cork in Sammy Sosa’s bat at Wrigley Field earlier this season, leading to Sosa’s seven-game suspension.
A crew chief in his 21st season, McClelland will work his third All-Star game — he also worked the 1986 game at the Astrodome in Houston and in 1998 at Coors Field in Denver.
Orioles shelve Daal, call reliever Bauer
Baltimore — The Baltimore Orioles placed left-hander Omar Daal on the 15-day disabled list Thursday and recalled Rick Bauer from Triple-A Ottawa to fill the void in the bullpen.
Daal complained of soreness in his left shoulder earlier this week, and an MRI revealed tendinitis in his rotator cuff. He hasn’t pitched since June 27, when he allowed three runs in three innings against Toronto.
