Athletes of the week

Nick McGovern

Free State

Class: Senior

Sport: Wrestling

HT: 5-11

The week: McGovern, who wrestled at 160 pounds last year, made to the jump to 189 this season, and it hasn’t slowed him. He took second at the ultra-competitive Basehor-Linwood Invitational on Saturday, with his only loss in the tournament coming to undefeated and Class 3-2-1A’s top-ranked Phillip Lyons from Effingham. On the way, McGovern, 14-6 this season, handed a couple of ranked wrestlers their second losses of the season, beating Columbus’s Curt Zahm (13-1 heading into the match) and Blue Valley’s Adam Monks (15-1).

“He wrestles a little bit small for a 189-pounder, but he makes up for it with quickness and wrestling smarts,” Free State coach Darrell Andrew said of McGovern.

“He works hard in the summer, wrestling with the East Kansas Kids Club, and he’s always wanting to pick up some new techniques. When it comes down to it, Nick’s gonna be ready at go time.”

Shannon Wilson

Perry-Lecompton

Class: Senior

Sport: Basketball

HT: 5-9

The week: The three-time All-Kaw Valley selection made a career statement — becoming the school’s all-time scoring leader — but she also helped the Kaws make a season statement as they won their first two games this year. Perry-Lecompton (2-8) beat Oskaloosa 41-35 on Tuesday, behind Wilson’s 21 points, but her big game came Friday when she scored 25 in a 49-39 win over Kansas City Piper. She had 20 by halftime, as many as the entire Pirates squad. Wilson has 1,168 career points.

Comment: “She just does everything. There were a couple of college coaches here watching her (Tuesday),” P-L coach Kevin Bost said. “She just does it every night. She comes to play.”
