Two traffic stops Monday night, one each by Lawrence Police and Douglas County Sheriff’s officers, turned into foot chases and led to the recovery of illegal drugs, police reported.

Suspects in both incidents stopped their cars and then fled on foot with officers close behind.

About 11:30 p.m. a Lawrence Police officer attempted to stop a Buick for speeding. The car stopped in the 400 block of West 12th Street but backed into the patrol car, according to a police report.

The driver and a passenger then got out of the car and ran. The officer caught the passenger, an 18-year-old Lawrence man, a short distance away. A small bag containing what police think was crack cocaine was also recovered near the suspect, police said.

The driver of the vehicle escaped.

Earlier, about 8:20 p.m., a sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a Nissan pickup truck for a traffic violation in the area of 23rd Street and Haskell Avenue.

The driver refused to stop until reaching a dead-end in the 2600 block of Cimarron Drive, a sheriff’s report said. The driver fled on foot.

The suspect, a 27-year-old Lawrence man, was found hiding under a vehicle in the 1500 block of East 28th Terrace after other sheriff and Lawrence police officers were called to the area to conduct a search.

Officers also recovered some marijuana and cocaine, but a sheriff’s spokeswoman declined to say where the drugs were found.

The suspects in both incidents were taken to the Douglas County Jail but were released Monday without charges being filed. Prosecutors generally don’t file charges in drug cases until lab tests have been conducted on the drugs. Arrest warrants can be issued after those tests are completed.
