Many offices, banks closed for holiday

Government offices in Lawrence will be closed today in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

However, there will be no disruption in sanitation routes this week and the Lawrence Transit System will operate on schedule. Metered parking in downtown Lawrence will not be monitored today.

Parks and Recreation aquatic lessons and classes at the aquatic centers will meet today. All other Parks and Recreation instructional classes are canceled. Adult sports leagues will play games as scheduled.

The family pool at the Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center will open at 1 p.m. Other Parks and Recreation centers have various schedules, as follows: Community Building, 115 W. 11th St., open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; East Lawrence Center, 1245 E. 15th St., 10 am. to 10 p.m.; Holcom Park Recreation Center, 2700 W. 27th St., 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; South Park Recreation Center, 1141 Mass., closed; Prairie Park Nature Center, closed; Eagle Bend Golf Course, accepting tee times.

City offices also are closed in most area towns. However, offices will be open in DeSoto and Eudora.

All county and state offices will be closed in Douglas, Jefferson and Leavenworth counties, as well as federal offices in the general services administration and the federal courts. The Franklin County clerk’s office will open from 8 a.m. to noon to facilitate advanced voting, but all other county offices will be closed.

There will be no classes at Kansas University, and all offices will be closed. Buses will not run. Watson and Anschutz libraries will be open from 1 p.m. to midnight.

Douglas County Senior Services will be closed, and all activities, including the Adult Day Program and the noon meal, will be canceled. Meals will not be served at Babcock Place, Edgewood Place, Lecompton, Eudora and Baldwin. The Senior Meals Program will not deliver, but Meals on Wheels will run on schedule.

Lawrence Public Library will be open normal hours from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

First class mail will not be delivered. However, Express Mail will be delivered, and the postal service will collect mail out of the blue boxes. UPS will deliver regularly.

Banks will be closed.

The Lawrence Journal-World circulation and advertising departments will be open regular hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be no change in USA Today deliveries.

Most liquor stores will be open.
