Police charge 3 in kidnapping

Three Kansas City, Kan., men were charged Monday in Douglas County District Court with kidnapping and intimidating a witness. The charges were in connection with an incident late Saturday in the 3800 block of Sunnybrook Lane.

About 11:20 p.m. Saturday, two men approached a 25-year-old Lawrence man and forced him into a GMC van, said Lawrence Police Sgt. Mike Pattrick. He later was released unharmed and called police, Pattrick said.

A van matching the description given by the victim was seen by an officer and stopped in the 200 block of Elm Street in North Lawrence, Pattrick said. Officers arrested four men inside the van, Pattrick said.

Three of the men were charged Monday afternoon.

James M. Navarro, 33, was charged with kidnapping and aggravated intimidation of a witness or victim. If convicted, he could be sentenced to a maximum of 247 months in prison for kidnapping and 46 months for intimidation of a witness.

Navarro, who was being held on $35,000 bond, was scheduled to be back in court at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Laurent C. McCambry, 21, and Michael Guerrero, 19, each were charged with aiding and abetting kidnapping and intimidation of a witness or victim. The aiding and abetting charge also carries a maximum 247-month prison sentence.

McCambry is being held on $25,000 bond. He is to be back in court at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Guerrero waived his right for a preliminary hearing within 10 days and will return to court Feb. 12. He is being held on $35,000 bond.

Police and prosecutors wouldn’t discuss any other cases the suspects and victim might be involved in.

The fourth man who was arrested was freed from jail Monday.
