Former President Bush to visit Salina for dinner

? This central-Kansas town is gearing up for a visit from former President Bush.

More than 1,000 people are expected to listen to the nation’s 41st president speak today at the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual meeting at the Bicentennial Center. Bush is scheduled to arrive in Salina about 5:30 p.m. that day and leave about four hours later for his flight back to Texas.

Caterer Tony Pezzola plans to smoke 600 pounds of pork and 1,500 4-ounce chicken breasts for the dinner.

Local law enforcement got some practice preparing for the visit when the elder Bush flew in October into Salina, before heading to Abilene to speak at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Library. Salina police helped with security arrangements and the former president’s motorcade.

“I wouldn’t call it a headache,” Police Chief Jim Hill said. “But certainly, there are a number of demands made.”

Chamber president Gerald Cook said there will be receptions with Bush for sponsors and members of the chamber board before and after the dinner.
