George I. Barnes

Ottawa — Services for George I. Barnes, 88, Ottawa, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Highland Cemetery in Ottawa. Burial will follow services.

Mr. Barnes died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at the Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 26, 1914, in Backus, Minn., the son of A.R. and Irma Irene (Church) Barnes. The family moved to Reamsville, where he grew up and graduated from the Smith Center High School.

Mr. Barnes worked on the family farm before moving to Ottawa in 1938. He then worked for Walt Wood Service Station.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and returned to Ottawa, where he worked for Minnick Motor Company. He became a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, a job he had until retirement.

He married Dorothy Monford, and they later divorced. He married Lela Randel in 1968. She died in 1994.

Survivors include a sister, Nina Snyder, Ottawa; a brother, Don, Ottawa; a stepson, James Randel, Hillsdale; and stepgrandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Lamb-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home in Ottawa. Friends may call after 8 a.m. today at the funeral home.
