Tip leads police to body

Person in custody in apparent homicide

A police briefing this morning should reveal more details of a killing discovered Saturday in a second-story apartment at Hampton Court complex near 23rd and Iowa streets.

Saturday night Lawrence Police hadn’t announced the identity of the victim, a white male about 50 years old who police think lived in the apartment, or the man they detained for questioning.

Lt. David Cobb would offer no details about the man detained except to say that someone had seen him with the victim sometime Friday and that “he may turn into a darn good suspect.”

Police responded to a tip about 2 p.m. Saturday at the building at 1722 W. 24th St. The informant, whom Cobb would not identify, said someone had been seriously injured late Friday or early Saturday.

When no one answered the door at the apartment, the apartment manager let police into the residence, where they found the victim, Cobb said.

Cobb said a scene of violence had occurred in the apartment, but would not provide details about the scene or the manner of death.

Police secure the scene of a suspected homicide Saturday evening at Hampton Court, 1722 W. 24th St.

Police guarded both entrances to the building Saturday and questioned residents as they came in and out during the evening.

“I feel like I’m in lockdown,” resident Tammy Mack said.

Mack, who lives on the first floor of the three-story building, said police asked her if she’d heard anything unusual between 2 p.m. Friday and midnight Saturday.

She said she hadn’t, a response police said was common.

“Inside the apartment complex, nobody actually knew anything had happened,” Cobb said.
