Spiritual leaders to honor MLK

Lawrence’s 18th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Celebration will be Jan. 16-20. The theme is “Love is Sharing, Caring and Working Together.”

Here’s a look at the schedule:

  • Jan. 16: An educational program, featuring a fine arts show of work by students in Lawrence public schools and a reception, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the cafeteria of Lawrence High School, 1901 La. There is no charge to attend, and the community is welcome to participate.
  • Jan. 18: The annual banquet, featuring inspirational speaker Carl R. Boyd of Chandler, Ariz., will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Kansas Union Ballroom. Tickets to the dinner and program are $20 for adults and $10 for students. The cost to attend only the program is $10 for adults, free for students. Tickets are available by calling 841-3437 or 843-8913.
  • Jan. 19: A gospel musical will be performed at 6:30 p.m. at Free Methodist Church, 3001 Lawrence Ave. Local youth and adult choirs, as well as guest soloist Eugene Blackmon of Portland, Ore., will perform. Guest director is Anthony Jones.
  • Jan. 20: A commemorative service will be conducted at 11:15 a.m. at the Lied Center. Yvonne Thornton, M.D., of the Jamaica Hospital Medical Center of New York City, will be the guest speaker.

Sponsors of the celebration are Kansas University, Lawrence public schools, Haskell Indian Nations University and the City of Lawrence.

Ecumenical Fellowship of Lawrence, Inc., an association of eight churches, has organized the celebration each year since 1986.
