NBA Roundup: Hornets maul Magic

McGrady's 40 points not enough as Orlando falls

? The New Orleans Hornets had trouble stopping Tracy McGrady, but did well enough against the rest of the Orlando Magic to secure their first victory in six games.

McGrady’s 40 points were the most against the Hornets by a player this season. But New Orleans used a balanced offense to give plenty of scoring opportunities to Jamal Mashburn, who scored 22 of his 29 points in the second half to lead the Hornets to a 100-89 victory Friday night.

“The biggest thing for us was for everybody to step up because a lot of times, when we play, defenses concentrate on me,” Mashburn said.

P.J. Brown scored 18 for New Orleans, while Courtney Alexander had 14 and Elden Campbell 13 off of the bench.

“I was so thrilled when P.J. had (13) at the half, because that was going to open things up for me … his man was going to be reluctant to leave him,” Mashburn said. “Then Elden got going. It just opens things up so much for me. I love to see these guys score.”

Brown’s free throw capped a 10-0 third-quarter run to give New Orleans a 67-54 lead and the Hornets never trailed again. McGrady made an array of tough jump shots — two with Alexander right in his face — and Orlando was able to pull within 71-65 heading into the final period. But Orlando hit only six of its first 17 shots in the final period and turned the ball over six times during that span as New Orleans put the game out of reach.

McGrady “had a great offensive night but he needs help,” Magic coach Doc Rivers said. “We’re not going to win games if Tracy is the only one to score.”

Mike Miller scored 13 for Orlando, but only four in the second half. Darrell Armstrong added 11 points. Injury-plagued Grant Hill, among the Magic’s top scorers, missed his third-straight game because of a sore left ankle.

Mashburn hit two three-pointers in the final minutes to put the game away. He scored most of his points on mid-range jump shots and several strong inside moves. He scored only one point from the foul line.

New Orleans made 49 percent of its shots to Orlando’s 44 percent and the Hornets scored 18 points from the foul line, improving on their loss Tuesday to Indiana, when New Orleans went to the foul line only eight times all game. New Orleans also turned 16 Magic turnovers into 25 points.

New York — Latrell Sprewell had a breakout game, scoring 25 points with seven assists, five rebounds and three steals.

Howard Eisley scored 17 points and Charlie Ward had a key steal and tip-in in the final minute for the Knicks.

Grizzlies 116, Clippers 111

Memphis, Tenn. — Gordan Giricek scored a season-high 31 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter, as Memphis won despite blowing a 32-point lead.

Giricek’s fourth quarter scoring spurt, which included eight straight points, sent the Clippers to their fifth straight loss. His 31 points were the most by a Memphis player this season.

Corey Maggette hit a three-pointer with 10:04 left to give the Clippers their first lead of the game, 94-93.

The two teams exchanged leads until the final four minutes when the Grizzlies outscored Los Angeles 12-7 down the stretch.

Jazz 118, Bucks 115

Milwaukee — Mark Jackson hit a three-pointer with 35 seconds left as the Utah Jazz had a season-high in points.

Utah led 96-78 heading into the fourth quarter, but Ray Allen made three free throws and Michael Redd converted a three-point play to pull Milwaukee within 114-110 with 1:21 left.

Calbert Cheaney of the Jazz then missed a three-point attempt, but Karl Malone pulled down the offensive rebound, and Jackson hit his three-pointer from the right baseline to give Utah a 117-110 lead with 35 seconds left.

Allen made two free throws to bring Milwaukee within 117-112, but Jackson added a free throw before Sam Cassell hit a three-pointer at the buzzer for the final score.

Spurs 98, Warriors 95

San Antonio — Tim Duncan scored a season-high 37 points on 14-of-18 shooting as San Antonio beat Golden State for the 11th straight time. The game was close the whole way, with 14 lead changes and 15 ties, but the Spurs went on a 15-4 fourth-quarter run to take a 90-84 lead with 3:08 left. Duncan scored 12 points during the burst.

Antawn Jamison scored 37 points to lead the Warriors.

It was Denver’s first win since Dec. 7, and only its second in 17 games.

Gary Payton had 25 points and 14 assists for Seattle, while Desmond Mason scored 17 of his 21 points in the first half.
