Big 12 Women: Wildcats wipe out Westerwinds

Return of All-America candidate sparks Stanford against Oklahoma

? Although Kansas State beat Western Illinois, Kendra Wecker was almost sad.

Her pass in the second half to Nicole Ohlde was off, and Ohlde missed a chance for a rare dunk in the fourth-ranked Wildcats’ 84-40 victory Friday night.

“It was all my fault,” Wecker said, her face buried in her hands.

Nevertheless, Wecker and Ohlde had plenty of good things to smile about.

Ohlde was 10-of-12 from the field and finished with 26 points, while Wecker scored 23 to lead Kansas State to its seventh straight victory.

K-State (12-1) never trailed on the way to winning its ninth straight home game this season.

“It wasn’t too pretty,” Western Illinois coach Leslie Crane said. “We didn’t play to our potential. But you have to give Kansas State credit. They’re ranked No. 4 for a reason.”

Kansas State led by as many as 47 points, held the Westerwinds without a field goal for the first 3:47 of the game and took a 9-0 lead with 16:32 remaining.

“The plan was to come out and try to get them early,” Wecker said.

The Wildcats did just that. During the first 11 minutes, Kansas State forced nine turnovers and had more points off turnovers (15) than Western Illinois had total points (12).

“We played solid across the board,” Kansas State coach Deb Patterson said. “It’s just a good, overall, well-balanced effort tonight. I thought our numbers we’re tremendous.”

The Wildcats led 50-23 at halftime. Kansas State forced 25 turnovers, 15 in the first half.

Kansas State shot a season-high 63 percent and held the Westerwinds to just 33 percent.

Ohlde and Wecker combined for 22 of Kansas State’s 34 second-half points.

Brie Madden added 10 points and seven rebounds for Kansas State.

Becky Tyo scored 11 points for Western Illinois (7-5), and Tugba Palazoglu added 10.

“I think the guards made great passes to me,” Ohlde said. “I was just able to knock them down.”

With center Ohlde and forward Wecker leading the way, Kansas State dominated down low. The Wildcats outscored Western Illinois 48-12 in the paint and outrebounded the Westerwinds 33-18.

“That’s what was flowing tonight,” said Ohlde of the inside game. “Coach saw something tonight and kept calling plays inside.”

Western Illinois defeated Kansas, 48-46, earlier this season. The Jayhawks play host to Kansas State in the Big 12 Conference opener at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

No. 6 Stanford 58, No. 19 Oklahoma 38

Stanford, Calif. — Azella Perryman had 14 points and 14 rebounds and Stanford won its fourth straight game.

Stanford welcomed the return of preseason All-America forward Nicole Powell, who played for the first time this season after sitting out with a bulging disc in her back.

Powell scored her first basket with 5:17 left in the first half, and finished with 13 points on 5-for-10 shooting and five rebounds in 24 minutes. Kelley Suminski added 10 points and six assists and Susan King had 12 points for the Cardinal (9-1).

Maria Villarroel scored 12 points and Dionnah Jackson added 10 for Oklahoma (9-4), which lost to Connecticut in the NCAA title game last season.

Stanford, undefeated since a 71-56 loss at then-No. 4 Tennessee on Dec. 18, started the second half with a 15-4 run to go ahead 44-26. King hit consecutive three-pointers during the spurt.

Stanford has played four ranked opponents in its first 10 games — that’s after only three games against ranked teams in 35 games last season.
