Jed Borovik, Lawrence, competed in a national chess tournament Dec. 13-15 in Atlanta. Borovik, who attends Quail Run School, competed in the fifth-grade division and placed 13th out of 291 competitors with four wins and two draws.

Washburn University announced area candidates for Dec. 13 graduation. They were: Angela Nordhus, Baldwin; William Scott, Berryton; John-Jo Garcia and Julie Cook, Eudora; Ami Siemer, Anita Martin, Bella Birdashaw, Eric Ibanez, Haryo Prabowo, Jeffrey Barnett-Winsby, Kelly Howe, Leah Rickards, Melissa Neal, Michel Bonham, Moritz Wolffer, Nelson Hall and Tomi Hitt, Lawrence; and Jessica Fouts, Wellsville.

The 47th annual Schwarz reunion was Sept. 29 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. A potluck dinner took place. Kathy Nealy conducted the business meeting. Marsue Frame gave a report on marriages, births and deaths. Cynthia Parsons presented the treasurer’s report.

Erna Schwarz Holmes won a contest by guessing the best answer as to the number of descendants of Charles and Magdalena Schwarz.

The 2003 reunion will be Sept. 3. Members of the reunion planning committee are Deanna Marquette, Darlene Bard, Harold Jehle and Sheri Flory. Kathy Nealy asked other family members to volunteer to help in planning the family’s 50th reunion.

Coffeyville Community College announced area students receiving honors for the fall semester.

Holly Hutchinson, Valley Falls, made the President’s 4.0 Honor Roll. Benjamin Cosman, Baldwin; Jamie McCauley, Lawrence; and Jessica Turner and Melanie Turner, Ottawa; made the President’s Honor Roll with at least at 3.75 GPA. Garrett Peterson, Osawatomie, and Erin O’Brien, Tonganoxie, made the Dean’s Honor Roll with at least a 3.4 GPA.
