Old home town – 40 and 100 years ago today
IN 1963 – The arrival of the new year with freezing rain and ice recalled the bitter previous January, when area flooding resulted from heavy freezes followed by quick thaws. Huge ice floes had surged down the Kaw River at the time, wiping out the Eudora bridge as a viable artery for the region.
Kansas University’s basketball team was still trying to recuperate from its 90-88, four-overtime triumph against Kansas State University in the semifinals of the Big Eight Tournament in Kansas City. Nolen Ellison had been magnificent for the Jayhawks, playing all 60 minutes to spark KU to the thrilling victory.
IN 1903 – From the Lawrence Daily World of Jan. 1, 1903: “This is the ideal time for all of us to swear off on bad habits. There are those who have an idea that a man is not human unless he is loaded up with expensive habits. The men who make the great successes in this world are the men who take care of themselves. The men who do things are the men who keep their brains at the best all the time. . . . One man who was just in our area married for wealth, but dividends come so slowly that he almost wishes he had not. . . . . Irving Hill has recently returned form a two-week hunting trip. This calls up the thought if he has yet paid for that lame duck he killed in the mill pond.”
