Willis, Weatherspoon handed suspensions
New York — Knicks forward Clarence Weatherspoon and Spurs forward-center Kevin Willis were suspended for one game without pay by the NBA on Tuesday for fighting.
Weatherspoon also was fined $20,000 and will miss New York’s game against Toronto on Wednesday. Willis sat out the San Antonio’s game Tuesday night at Washington.
Weatherspoon and Willis were disciplined for their fight late in the third quarter of Monday night’s game won by the Knicks 96-95. Willis was suspended for retaliating with a punch.
Weatherspoon held onto Willis after New York’s Michael Doleac hit a jumper and pushed him into the first row of seats.
Ailing Jackson goes on Sacramento DL
Sacramento, Calif. — Bobby Jackson was placed on the Sacramento Kings’ injured list Tuesday with a broken left hand.
Jackson, the Kings’ second-leading scorer with 19.5 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game, started 26 games during Mike Bibby’s absence with a broken foot.
Jackson broke his left hand when Shaquille O’Neal knocked the ball out of his hands with about five minutes left in the Kings’ win over the Lakers on Christmas Day. He underwent surgery Thursday at UC Davis Medical Center. Sacramento isn’t sure how long Jackson will be out.
The Kings filled Jackson’s roster spot by activating guard Mateen Cleaves, who has been on the injured list twice this season.
Dallas coach unhappy with LaFrentz showing
Dallas — Raef LaFrentz appears to be in Dallas coach Don Nelson’s doghouse.
LaFrentz, a former Kansas University All-American, drew the coach’s ire after scoring only two points in a 110-107 loss to Milwaukee on Monday night.
LaFrentz made only one of five field-goal attempts and had just three rebounds in 16 minutes.
“He didn’t perform tonight,” Nelson said. “I’m tired of hearing about confidence problems. He is a guy who has had enough opportunities to get his game in order and hasn’t.
“There will be no punches pulled anymore. We need him to be an effective player and he hasn’t been. It’s really that simple.”
Hornets’ Davis suffers back spasms
New Orleans — Baron Davis was forced out of the New Orleans Hornets’ game Tuesday night because of back spasms.
The guard, who has been playing with a herniated disk, cringed after taking an awkward step while handling the ball in the first quarter and motioned that he needed to come out.
Davis managed to get back on defense and led New Orleans’ next possession over halfcourt before calling a timeout and walking off with a trainer.
He left the game against the Indiana Pacers with about two minutes left in the first quarter after recording four points and an assist in nine minutes.
Davis has been bothered on and off by back spasms since the latter part of last season.
