NBA Roundup: Gooden gives Magic lift

Orlando halts Mavs' six-game winning streak

? It’s early yet, but Drew Gooden and Gordan Giricek are looking like the best additions to Orlando since Mickey Mouse.

In their third game since coming to the Magic in a trade, the two rookies scored 20 points apiece and combined for 18 rebounds as Orlando won its season-high fourth straight game by beating the Dallas Mavericks, 98-93, Tuesday night.

“With the talent we have, you play hard and something good is going to come up.” said Gooden, who had 10 rebounds for his second double-double in a Magic uniform.

Gooden was one of three former Kansas University players in the game. Jacque Vaughn scored nine points for Orlando, and Dallas’ Raef LaFrentz was held scoreless.

Gooden is averaging 19 points and nine rebounds for the Magic, while Giricek has 16.7 and 5.7. That’s helping Tracy McGrady, who led Orlando with 26 points and seven assists but was frustrated as he struggled to find his shot against the Mavericks’ tight defense. He even drew an uncharacteristic technical foul in the first half after throwing an elbow.

“This was a night where they did a good job of double-teaming and making me give it up,” said McGrady, averaging 7.5 assists over the last four games.

McGrady sank a driving layup to give Orlando a 90-89 lead, then followed with a block of Walt Williams’ dunk attempt. Giricek followed with a jumper off a loose ball that put Orlando up by three points with 1:10 remaining, and the Magic drained all six of their foul shots down the stretch as the Magic closed with a 10-4 run.

“We’re finishing games,” said McGrady, who made 10 0f 20 shots. “We’re maturing out there each night as the nights go by.”

By winning their fourth straight home game, the Magic reached .500 for the first time since Jan. 31. They hold a one-game lead over Washington — which also won — for the eighth playoff seed in the Eastern Conference.

“There’s a glow, and we have to keep that going,” Orlando coach Doc Rivers said.

Dallas, which had won six straight games, received 26 points and seven rebounds from Dirk Nowitzki. Reserve Nick Van Exel added 18 points and Michael Finley 17.

Dallas' Eduardo Najera, left, pulls a rebound away from Orlando's Shawn Kemp. The Magic defeated the Mavericks, 98-93, Tuesday night in Orlando, Fla.

Trail Blazers 89, Hawks 86

Portland, Ore. — Rasheed Wallace had 24 points and nine rebounds as Portland held off Atlanta. Portland, which led by as many as 12 points but had to fend off a second-half challenge, avoided just their second three-game losing streak this season.

The Hawks have lost seven of their last nine and are just 5-24 this season on the road. Glenn Robinson led them with 24 points.

Lakers 109, Clippers 98

Los Angeles — Kobe Bryant’s remarkable scoring streaks ended. But he still helped the Los Angeles Lakers win for the 12th time in 14 games. Shadowed closely by Corey Maggette and often double-teamed, Bryant scored 32 points as the Lakers beat the Los Angeles Clippers 109-98. Bryant thus failed in his attempt to extend his streak of scoring at least 40 points to 10 games, which would have tied Wilt Chamberlain for the second-longest streak in NBA history.

Kings 81, Pistons 75

Sacramento, Calif. — Chris Webber scored 19 points and hit his final three shots in a miserable shooting game as Sacramento beat Detroit for the eighth straight time. Webber scored on three straight possessions in the final 90 seconds.

Spurs 84, Heat 69

San Antonio — Tim Duncan had 17 points and 10 rebounds, helping San Antonio defeat Miami. It was the 11th victory in the last 12 games for the Spurs. They had three other players in double figures, with Malik Rose getting 14, Bruce Bowen 11 and Manu Ginobili 10. The Spurs swept the season series from Miami. They beat the Heat 67-65 earlier this year.

The Heat, who have dropped four of their last five contests, were led by Eddie Jones with 13 points. Sean Lampley chipped in 11.

Wizards 83, Pacers 78

Indianapolis — Michael Jordan scored 25 points and Tyronn Lue added 18 points and 11 assists as Washington beat Indiana. The Pacers have lost five straight games — their longest skid of the season — and eight of 12.

The Pacers turned a 10-point third quarter deficit into a one-point lead with 2:51 left when Reggie Miller, who led them with 25, hit a three-pointer.

Knicks 102, Rockets 95

New York — Latrell Sprewell and Kurt Thomas each stole the ball from Yao Ming on two late possessions as New York snapped a four-game losing streak. Yao scored 24 points and grabbed six rebounds in his first appearance at Madison Square Garden, but his two turnovers down the stretch were costly. Allan Houston scored 28, Shandon Anderson had 14 and Sprewell and Thomas added 13 apiece for the Knicks, who scored eight of the game’s final nine points.

Cavaliers 93, Nets 90

Cleveland — Zydrunas Ilgauskas scored 29 points as Cleveland gained its first win since the All-Star break. Ilgauskas also stole a pass from Jason Kidd and hit two free throws with 13.7 seconds left for the Cavs, who snapped a six-game losing streak with their first win since Feb. 5.

Cleveland nearly blew it in the closing seconds, however, and only survived when Kidd’s game-tying three-pointer at the horn hit the front of the rim.
