Santa Fe Trail charges into state meet

Chargers claim Class 4A regional wrestling team title, nine individual qualifiers

? It was Santa Fe Trail High’s day at the Class 4A regional wrestling tournament on Saturday at Santa Fe Trail.

The Chargers edged Fort Scott, 181 1/2 to 176, for the team title, claimed two individual champions and qualified nine wrestlers for the Kansas state tournament Friday and Saturday at the Kansas Coliseum in Wichita.

Santa Fe Trail sophomore Max Connelly (31-6) beat Anderson County’s Nick Sanders for the 135-pound title.

Sophomore teammate Chad Schmale (28-3) was the default champion at 140 when Fort Scott’s Nathan Allison withdrew.

Baldwin finished a distant third, with 119 points. Eudora was eighth, DeSoto was 11th and Ottawa 14th.

The Bulldogs qualified six wrestlers for state, while Baldwin junior Kyle Flory (36-6) was their lone champion. He scored a major decision over Prairie View wrestler Brandon Sommer for his second consecutive 171-pound regional title.

Eudora senior Mike Paxton won the 215-pound title, pinning Santa Fe Trail’s Dustin DeWitt. He was one of three Cardinal qualifiers.

DeSoto freshman Neil Erisman remained undefeated this season, as he improved to 30-0. He pinned Spring Hill’s Justin Stirling for the 145-pound title and was one of three Wildcat qualifiers.

Ottawa qualified two wrestlers for state.

Pingleton perfect for Jags

Hoyt — Mill Valley senior Eric Pingleton stayed perfect this season, winning the 189-pound title at the Class 4A regional wrestling tournament Saturday at Royal Valley High.

Pingleton, who improved to 37-0, won the final by forfeit over Kansas City Piper’s Nick Jobe. He was one of four Jaguars in the finals, helping Mill Valley to a fifth-place finish.

Lansing edged host Royal Valley for the title. Tonganoxie finished seventh, while Perry-Lecompton was 14th.

The Chieftains qualified six wrestlers for the state tournament, while Perry-Lecompton will send one — senior Pat Kettler.

Mill Valley qualified six wrestlers.
